Our institute specializes in applied research, pioneering innovative solutions for both public and industrial sectors, and transforming these innovations into commercially viable products and processes.
Project Overview: The EU-funded initiative "Eastern Lights" is dedicated to enhancing risk management in large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCUS) across Eastern Europe. This project aims to mitigate risks associated with CO2 transport and underground storage by developing advanced monitoring strategies and validating methodologies in controlled environments. The goal is to demonstrate a financially viable decarbonization pathway for the cement industry in this region.
Available Positions: We are currently offering two research assistant roles within this project at our Bochum location.
Position 1: Reservoir Geophysics
- Develop innovative workflows for monitoring CCUS utilizing passive seismic data.
- Implement noise-based techniques on diverse datasets.
- Conduct and analyze seismic waveform simulations using high-performance computing resources.
- Interpret findings concerning reservoir integrity and seismic risk.
Position 2: Monitoring & AI
- Engage in the creation and application of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) tools for CO2 reservoir monitoring.
- Utilize platforms such as TensorFlow and PyTorch for data processing and analysis related to CO2 transport and storage.
- Devise efficient methods for data transmission and processing.
- Develop a real-time demonstration interface to provide operational insights.
- Continuously enhance ML models as more advanced data becomes available.
Common Responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation of research proposals.
- Contribute to the drafting of publications and presentations in English.
- Participate in various administrative tasks.
Qualifications:
- A completed university degree (diploma or master's) in geosciences, engineering, or physics.
- Preferred knowledge of numerical methods and experience with programming languages such as Matlab or Python.
- Excellent written and spoken English proficiency.
