Purpose of the Role

We are looking for a dedicated student to assist our team of researchers and engineers in conducting experiments and research in optical sensing, particularly in the realm of smart instruments and optical coherence tomography (OCT) for medical applications and robotics.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop innovative smart instruments and medical imaging technologies, employing various optical sensing techniques with an emphasis on applications in medical robotics
  • Evaluate concepts, core functionalities, and analyze data produced by optical sensing hardware and software
  • Assist in the creation of advanced research-grade prototypes within laboratory settings
  • Investigate existing solutions in scientific literature and patents, customizing them to meet our requirements
  • Conduct and assess experiments utilizing both free space and fiber-based optical systems

Candidate Profile

  • Currently pursuing a master's degree in mechanical, electrical, or (bio)medical engineering, optics & photonics, computer science, physics, or a related field
  • Strong foundational knowledge of optics, with an emphasis on OCT and smart instruments preferred
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Matlab, C/C++, or CUDA
  • Practical experience with optical systems and signal processing algorithms is advantageous
  • Familiarity with the development and integration of data acquisition electronics and scanners is a plus
  • Experience in setting up and aligning fiber-based or free space optical systems is desirable
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills in English and/or German
  • A passion for innovation and a keen interest in new technologies, along with a motivation to work in agile, interdisciplinary teams
