As an Ontologist, you will collaborate with a global team of knowledge creators to deliver exceptional, user-friendly, and comprehensive taxonomy and ontology models that optimize product discovery across Amazon's web and mobile platforms.

Your role involves working closely with business partners, data science, and engineering teams to provide knowledge-driven solutions that enhance product discoverability for customers.

In this position, you will have a direct influence on customer experiences and contribute to the foundational product knowledge of the company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop logical, semantically rich, and scalable data models for Amazon's extensive product catalog.
  • Ensure our ontologies cover comprehensive sub-domains that are suitable for machine ingestion and inference.
  • Conduct research on global understanding of Amazon products to create scalable data models that address customer challenges and improve product discoverability.
  • Generate new schemas utilizing Generative Artificial Intelligence (generative AI) models.
  • Enhance existing data retrieval methods by leveraging our vast product catalog and query languages.
  • Analyze website metrics and product discovery behaviors to make informed decisions on optimizing our knowledge graph data models globally.
  • Contribute to the development of new tool features and processes for the Ontology team.
  • Promote alignment with ontology modeling and technology best practices within our organization and across Amazon.
  • Coordinate cross-functional projects with a diverse range of technical and non-technical teams.

Basic Qualifications

  • Degree in Library Science, Information Systems, Linguistics, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in ontology and/or taxonomy roles.
  • Proven skills in data retrieval and research techniques.
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex processes and communicate them clearly.
  • Ability to articulate knowledge-based requirements to engineering and retail teams.
  • Familiarity with Semantic Web technologies (RDF/s, OWL), query languages (SPARQL), and validation/reasoning standards (SHACL, SPIN).
  • Knowledge of both open-source and commercial ontology engineering tools (e.g., Protege, TopQuadrant products, PoolParty).
  • Detail-oriented problem-solving skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage ambiguity.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in English.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library Science, Information Systems, Linguistics, or related fields.
  • Experience in building ontologies within the e-commerce and semantic search domains.
  • Familiarity with schema-level constructs (e.g., higher-order classes, punning, property inheritance).
  • Proficiency in SQL and SPARQL.
  • Understanding of the software engineering life cycle.
  • Familiarity with ontology manipulation programming libraries.
  • Exposure to data science and/or machine learning, including graph embeddings.
