The Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Postdoctoral Researcher. This role is situated within the saai | Archive for Architecture and Civil Engineering, a premier collection in Germany, renowned for its extensive documentation of architectural history. Our mission is to enhance the accessibility of research materials and foster innovative exhibition and publication initiatives.
Over the coming years, our international research center will explore the significance of architectural archives as catalysts for social dynamics. These archives serve as vital resources for analyzing sustainable knowledge development and data practices for future advancements. They also embody intricate knowledge systems and material interactions, necessitating novel methodological approaches to preserve their integrity, particularly in light of the transformative capabilities of artificial intelligence in metadata creation.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement applied research projects utilizing experimental methodologies within the diverse collection at saai, incorporating self-learning processes, data generation, metadata acquisition, and media transformation through AI.
- Critically evaluate and enhance established national and international standards for architectural archives and multimedia collections, assessing their applicability to saai.
- Formulate a comprehensive digital strategy that integrates AI across various archiving processes, collaborating closely with archive directors and the strategic team.
- Prepare and contribute to interdisciplinary research proposals aimed at securing national and international funding.
- Foster interdisciplinary collaborations with internal KIT entities, including KCIST and SCC, as well as within the faculty.
- Establish networks and partnerships at regional, national, and international levels to promote digital strategies and exemplary projects.
Qualifications
- A completed doctoral degree focusing on digital humanities, computer science related to cultural heritage, archival studies, architecture, information science, museology, art history, media, or communication studies.
- Proven experience and knowledge in AI and/or archival sciences, along with familiarity with digitization techniques for both analog and digital collections.
- A collaborative mindset with a keen interest in interdisciplinary work involving archivists, architects, historians, and media scientists, coupled with a willingness to experiment at both micro and macro levels.
- Proficiency in current scripting languages, database management, and the ability to articulate complex technical concepts within the realm of digital humanities and archives.
- Excellent communication skills in both German and English, both spoken and written.
- Practical experience in project and research data management within the cultural sector is advantageous; prior experience in an archive, scientific collection, or museum is preferred.
Compensation
The position offers a salary in accordance with category 13 TV-L, commensurate with professional and personal qualifications.
