The Regional Data Center Operations Director is accountable for overseeing one or more Amazon Datacenter Clusters and PoP-scale deployments within a designated region.

This role represents the highest level of Infrastructure Operations management in the region, bearing responsibility for critical aspects such as safety, security, availability, scalability, efficiency, and cost management.

The Regional Infrastructure Operations structure comprises three primary functions: compute operations, engineering operations, and logistics.

While a physical security organization does not report directly to the Regional Operations Leader, it plays a vital role in the overall operation.

Compute operations concentrate on the server-level platforms that support both Amazon Retail and Amazon Web Services. Engineering Operations is dedicated to the mechanical, electrical, and control systems that sustain our data center's critical environments. Logistics Operations is responsible for materials planning and control to facilitate ongoing operations and expansions. Security Operations are tasked with ensuring the physical security of our personnel, assets, and customer data.

The Regional Operations Director must possess the ability to build and lead high-performing teams across these functions, manage day-to-day operations, and have the technical acumen and curiosity to address challenges as they arise.

This position is crucial within the management team responsible for operating and scaling the world's largest cloud computing infrastructure. We face intriguing, challenging, and complex problems daily.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruiting, managing, and developing the operations team, including compute operations managers, engineering operations managers, logistics operations managers, and their respective teams.
  • Achieving organizational performance goals related to safety, security, availability, scalability, efficiency, and cost.
  • Planning and executing the Infrastructure Operations components for new datacenter and Colocation (Colo) expansions.
  • Managing the operation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and control systems for Amazon datacenters, including preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and change management.
  • Overseeing vendor management for Colo datacenter service providers to ensure performance SLAs are met or exceeded.
  • Responding to and managing safety, security, and availability incidents, including incident resolution.
  • Driving continuous improvement in operational processes, procedures, methods, and tools.
