We are currently seeking a

Senior Optical Engineer for Design and Analysis (m/f/d)

Are you a seasoned Optical Engineer ready to tackle the challenges of developing optical instruments for cutting-edge space missions? In this pivotal role, you will oversee the design and analysis of optical systems. Your expertise will be instrumental in the realization and validation of spaceborne optical instruments and subsystems. As a knowledgeable resource, you will collaborate with fellow optical engineers across various projects and teams, offering insights on design concepts and assisting in resolving technical challenges. At OHB, you will thrive in an exhilarating work environment characterized by professionalism and diversity, engaging with a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team on flagship programs for ESA, DLR, and commercial New Space initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the optical design and development of systems and products for current and future European and German space missions. Coordinate optical design, development, integration, and testing activities with other engineering disciplines and technical leadership. Conduct and oversee optical design and analysis, including tolerancing from initial concept through to final product. Define, lead, and execute trade studies to inform principal optical design decisions. Establish technical requirements for optical systems, subsystems, and components. Develop methods for optical verification, integration, alignment strategies, and performance budgeting. Facilitate technical communication with customers and subcontractors.

Required Qualifications

A university degree or equivalent in optics, physics, engineering, or a related technical field. Extensive knowledge in optics, with senior-level expertise in optical modeling and simulation using design software such as ZEMAX or Code V. Strong understanding of imaging systems, telescopes, spectrometers, and interferometers for space applications across a wide spectral range. Experience collaborating with other engineering fields, including mechanical, structural, and thermal engineering. Proficient in spoken and written English.

Desirable Skills

Familiarity with detector technologies (CMOS, CCDs, Bolometers) as they relate to the optical chain of space instruments. Programming capabilities in Python or Matlab. Experience in straylight design and analysis using tools like FRED, ASAP, or similar. Hands-on experience with optical alignment and testing of optical instruments. Knowledge of collaboration with manufacturers of optical components such as lenses, mirrors, and coatings.
