We are currently seeking a student specializing in Transportation Science, Engineering with a focus on Transportation, Geoinformatics, or related fields for our Institute of Transportation Research located in Berlin. This role involves the calibration and enhancement of national traffic diversion strategies.

Through the use of models, simulations, virtual environments, and experimental setups, we proactively engage with partners from various sectors including business, local governments, and policy-making bodies.
The department focusing on 'Spaces in Mobility and Transportation Systems' is tasked with crafting and assessing transportation networks, infrastructures, and spaces. Our objective is to facilitate a transformation in mobility that is socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable. We analyze the interplay between transportation needs and traffic patterns in relation to spatial and network configurations. Utilizing scientific expertise, we create plausible future scenarios for interconnected traffic networks and forecast mobility demands at local, regional, and national levels. This knowledge allows us to design and evaluate tangible solutions for network and space planning, which we validate in both virtual and real-world contexts. Our collaborators include municipalities, industry leaders, and public institutions such as federal ministries and research organizations.
As an intern, you will engage in projects within the 'Traffic Network and Hub Design' team, which concentrates on the planning and optimization of transportation networks and nodes. The traffic models and simulations employed by the team are continuously refined to tackle emerging scientific inquiries. Your primary focus will be on the (dynamic) diversion of national road traffic, necessitating innovative methods for large-scale implementation. You will conduct a thorough analysis of various diversion techniques across different simulation platforms, aiming to evaluate their applicability and precision while identifying their respective strengths and weaknesses.
Your responsibilities during the internship will primarily include:
- Conducting research to identify and select appropriate modeling software for the implementation and assessment of diversion techniques
- Performing literature reviews on existing diversion methodologies
- Integrating and calibrating diversion methods and validating the resulting data
- Assessing results in terms of applicability and accuracy
There is also the potential for a subsequent thesis project upon agreement with your academic institution.
What We Expect From You:- Currently enrolled in a master's program in Transportation Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Geoinformatics, or a related discipline
- Fundamental understanding of traffic modeling, particularly in diversion techniques
- Proficient in both German and English
- Familiarity with VISUM, MATSim, or SUMO is advantageous
- Basic knowledge of relevant programming languages such as Java, Python, or R, along with version control systems (git) is preferred
