Join the captivating realm of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), where research and innovation shape the future. With the expertise and curiosity of our employees from over 100 nations, along with our unique infrastructure, we provide an exciting and inspiring work environment. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and contribute to solving global challenges. Are you ready to tackle this significant future task with us? Your place is with us.

We are seeking a System Engineer (m/f/d) for project management in safety-critical projects within our Space Operations and Astronaut Training division, specifically in the Communication & Ground Stations unit.

Your Responsibilities:

To operate satellites, it is essential to facilitate data exchange between the satellites and the ground segment. This task is organized by the German Space Operations Center (GSOC) through the Communication & Ground Stations unit. The data transmission involves the provision and operation of the complete ground segment, including antenna systems with corresponding signal processing systems and data preparation, as well as a data network to connect to the space control center. Through the antennas of the satellite ground station, telemetry data (information from the spacecraft), command data (control data for the spacecraft), tracking data (location of the satellite), sensor data from the satellite (payload data from scientific satellites), and communication channels (telephony, video, TV, internet, etc. for communication satellites) are transmitted. Additional tasks and projects include modernization, maintenance, configuration, and operation of the antenna systems, as well as planning and implementing communication interfaces with external ground stations.

As a member of the team at the satellite ground station, you will work on safety-critical projects and take on project work and management responsibilities. Your role will include the following activities:

Project Work and Management:

  • Primary contact for clients regarding all service components at the satellite ground station for safety-critical projects.
  • Lead negotiations for coordination, clarification, and assessment of future safety-critical contractual requirements.
  • Continuous analysis and evaluation of customer requirements, along with planning and coordination of resulting follow-up projects.
  • Preparation of tenders, evaluation of offers, and conducting negotiations for cooperation and operational contracts.
  • Coordination, execution, and moderation of regular meetings regarding project status and progress.
  • Monitoring of the project budget.

Operational Responsibilities:

  • Design and management of operational ground operations, including the creation and enhancement of operational and support procedures.
  • Development of an operational and maintenance concept.
  • Definition of requirements and coordination of activities among various teams concerning specific project requirements.
  • Overall responsibility for the project-defined content of the User Help Desk and adherence to the Service Level Agreement.
  • Monitoring and troubleshooting of system technology down to the device level.
  • Conducting functional tests and measurement verification of system parameters.
  • Coordination of frequency and satellite changes between the anchor station and the operational area.

What We Expect from You:
  • Completed university degree (FH/Bachelor) in engineering (e.g., electronics with a focus on data processing, communication technology, or satellite communication technology) or other relevant fields of study.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Strong knowledge in communication technology (modulation techniques, signal processing).
  • Good understanding of high-frequency measurement technology.
  • Willingness to be on-call.
  • Willingness to undergo security clearance (if project-related).
  • Excellent command of German (spoken and written).
  • Good command of English (spoken and written).
  • Familiarity with ECSS standards.
  • Sense of responsibility and team spirit.
