We invite applications for a fully funded PhD position to become part of the Alderson Lab within the Institute of Structural Biology at Helmholtz Munich and the Department of Bioscience at TU Munich. The selected candidate will be enrolled in both the Helena Graduate School and the Technical University of Munich Graduate School, and upon successful completion of the thesis, will be awarded a PhD degree from TU Munich.
In the Alderson Lab, our focus is on elucidating how proteins involved in heat shock and cell death pathways perceive and respond to stress. Many elements of these pathways oligomerize and feature intrinsically disordered regions that lack stable conformations. To analyze these dynamic systems, we employ an integrative structural biology methodology that merges NMR spectroscopy, cryo-EM, and various biophysical techniques. Additionally, we utilize AI-driven protein structure prediction methods, with recent applications concentrating on proteome-level structural bioinformatics.
We are a burgeoning research group affiliated with the Institute of Structural Biology and located at the Bavarian NMR Center on the TUM-Garching Campus. Our facilities include cutting-edge structural biology infrastructure, such as a 1.2-GHz NMR spectrometer and a 300-kV Titan Krios G4 cryo-electron microscope, along with exceptional computational resources. Throughout your doctoral research, you will acquire expertise in advanced structural biology techniques, enhance your computational biology and data analysis skills, and gain proficiency in various molecular biology and biochemistry laboratory methodologies.
Key Responsibilities

Candidate Profile
- Outstanding candidates holding a Master's degree in biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, computational biology, molecular biology, pharmacy, or structural biology
- Strong enthusiasm for structural biology, NMR, and/or intrinsically disordered protein regions
- Proven experience in molecular biology, protein science, or structural biology
- Exceptional motivation to engage in a competitive research program
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken
