Job Opportunity: W3-Professorship in Livestock Genomics

The Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill a W3-Professorship in Livestock Genomics within the Faculty of Natural Sciences III, Institute of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences.

Research Focus

The successful candidate will be expected to represent the field of Livestock Genomics in teaching and research. The research focus will be on the molecular background of relevant traits in livestock, including characteristics for production, health, and longevity, as well as efficiency of nutrients and prevention of environmentally relevant emissions.

The candidate will also be expected to investigate the molecular basis of animal behavior in modern husbandry systems and apply the knowledge acquired from researching in these fields to livestock breeding programs under consideration of societal demands following the goal of a promotion of sustainability and protection of natural resources.

Methodological Approaches

The candidate will have the opportunity to work with data acquired in research facilities and laboratories, as well as field data collected in commercial farms. Modern research facilities are available on the Heide-Süd campus, and numerous opportunities for cooperation exist with the groups of animal nutrition and animal husbandry and livestock health management.

Requirements

The successful candidate should have a proven professional track record with relevant publications and experience in planning, conducting, and evaluating scientific experiments based on state-of-the-art methodology, such as SNP genotyping, (re-)sequencing, gene expression, and protein analyses.

Familiarity with the general field of animal breeding and the application of animal breeding scientific results in breeding programs is a prerequisite. The candidate will also be expected to teach animal science and, to a minor extent, human nutrition.

Appointment Requirements

The candidate must fulfill the pre-conditions of appointment as stipulated in section 35 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities. Particular emphasis is placed on a Habilitation in the relevant field or equivalent scientific achievement and recognition. The candidate should have attained the appropriate level of experience or qualification in teaching and be willing to participate in university self-administration.
