Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated PhD candidate to engage in advanced research focused on biomass combustion and its atmospheric implications. This role is situated within the Leibniz Science Campus (LSC) 'Smoke and Bio-aerosols: Release, Processes, and Impacts in a Changing Climate'. The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) is recognized globally for its contributions to aerosol and cloud research.
Research Objectives:
The Atmospheric Chemistry Department (ACD) at TROPOS is a leading entity in atmospheric research. The selected candidate will participate in a collaborative project involving multiple research groups in Leipzig, aimed at enhancing our understanding of fire dynamics, fire ecology, and their atmospheric consequences.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct experiments on biomass combustion and atmospheric aging using the ACD's specialized chamber and the Leipzig Biomass Burning Facility.
- Contribute to the development of the CAPRAM biomass burning module.
- Investigate various fuel types and analyze emissions during different times of the day.
- Adjust experimental conditions, including relative humidity and nitrogen oxides levels.
- Participate in field campaigns associated with the LSC.
- Collaborate with modeling teams within the LSC, specifically in work package 2.3, utilizing ACD's CAPRAM model.
- Analyze and interpret research data in line with current scientific standards.
- Present findings at international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in chemistry, environmental science, meteorology, or a related field.
- Strong motivation and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Genuine interest in experimental research on biomass burning and model development.
- Proficient in English, both written and spoken.
- Experience with data analysis software such as IGOR, R, or MATLAB is advantageous.
Additional Skills:
Knowledge of chamber or field studies, atmospheric measurement techniques, including online mass spectrometry, is beneficial. A foundational understanding of atmospheric chemistry and physics will also be advantageous.
