PhD Position in AAV Engineering for HIV-1 Targeted Gene Therapy

The Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV) is a leading research institution for basic biomedical research. As a foundation under civil law and member of the Leibniz Association, the Institute occupies a prominent position both nationally and internationally.
The BMBF research group Genomics of Retroviral Infection, headed by Dr. Ulrike Lange, focuses on the biology of human exogenous and endogenous retroviruses and on the development of approaches to control retroviral infections. The group uses a wide range of experimental methods combined with computational biology approaches to address research questions that span from basic to translational science. We have recently generated advanced AAV gene therapy vectors for primary lymphocytes using a nanobody engineering approach. We are now expanding this work with the aim of developing optimized engineered AAV-based vectors for HIV-1-targeted in vivo gene therapy.
We are seeking a highly motivated and independent candidate for a PhD position in AAV engineering for HIV-1 targeted gene therapy. The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative research effort with Yale University and Gladstone Institutes.
Your Responsibilities- Conduct an experimental research project on the topic of HIV-1 targeted gene therapy
- Apply experimental methods such as molecular and cell biology techniques, cell culture, and infection of cell lines and primary immune cells
- Present research findings at regular internal meetings and national and international conferences
- Collaborate with project research partners and national and international colleagues
- Develop as an independent researcher with accountability towards the research project and group
- Strong commitment, team spirit, excellent communication and organizational skills, and ability to plan and execute experiments in an independent and flexible manner
- MSc degree or equivalent qualification in the life sciences (biology, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular life sciences, or related subject)
- Excellent English language skills (oral and written)
- Previous laboratory experiences in molecular biology and cell culture techniques
- Expertise in AAV technology and/or primary immune cell culture is an asset
- Open to research stays abroad for example at institutions of collaborating partners according to needs of project
- Working as part of a highly motivated team in an international environment
- Remuneration according to EG 13 TV-AVH (Hamburg Employment Law Association Collective Agreement) (comparable to TVöD - Civil Service Collective Agreement), including company pension scheme

The position is initially limited for 3 years with start date of 1st January 2025.
