Data Management Specialist / Bioinformatics Expert

  • Focus on the German Human Genome-Phenome Archive (GHGA)

GHGA is an integral part of the national research data infrastructure initiative. As a key node within the European Genome-Phenome Archive, GHGA aims to establish a robust international framework for human genomic data. Our efforts are aligned with leading global initiatives, including the European Genomics Data Infrastructure and the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health. This infrastructure will empower genomics data hubs with advanced tools for secure data storage, interactive visualization, and efficient data management solutions.

Your Responsibilities

We are looking for a Data Management Specialist with a background in bioinformatics to oversee the data management system within GHGA. In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Facilitating daily operations on the data portal
  • Enhancing and refining existing operational protocols
  • Guiding product development through user feedback for future iterations of the GHGA toolset
  • Collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to develop and implement bioinformatics workflows in a cloud computing environment
  • Engaging with partners within the GHGA network and international collaborations

Your specific tasks will include:

  • Identifying appropriate datasets and assessing their potential for sharing
  • Conducting quality control on datasets and preparing data and metadata for submission
  • Creating and implementing standard operating procedures for managing human omics data
  • Developing strategies for data ingestion, metadata validation, and quality assurance
  • Managing data access requests and navigating the associated administrative and legal processes
  • Staying informed on secure data handling practices and engaging with international initiatives

Your Profile
  • Master's degree or equivalent in bioinformatics, computational biology, biological sciences, computer science, physics, mathematics, engineering, or related fields; a PhD is a plus
  • Proven experience in developing data management and curation strategies
  • Familiarity with NGS, omics data, data security, and privacy regulations
  • Proficiency in UNIX-based systems and programming languages such as Python or R
  • Experience in developing structured metadata using modeling languages like LinkML and JSON Schema is advantageous
  • Knowledge of software development and cloud computing is beneficial
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills in English
