The individual will be tasked with ensuring the secure and efficient functioning of research and educational activities through adherence to laboratory regulations, implementation of OHS policies, and acquisition of necessary licenses and permits, all while navigating a multifaceted organizational framework.Key Responsibilities:
- Provide essential technical, compliance, and safety guidance to all laboratory personnel.
- Develop and maintain local protocols, risk assessments, standard operating procedures, and departmental risk registers.
- Foster strong relationships with facility users, operational teams, and stakeholders to collaboratively implement compliance strategies and initiatives.
Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will exhibit outstanding interpersonal and organizational capabilities, with a proven ability to manage and collaborate effectively within a scientific or medical laboratory context. A comprehensive understanding of OHS legislation and laboratory standards is essential, along with the capacity to devise practical solutions to intricate challenges. Furthermore, proficiency in computer applications and adaptability to new technologies are crucial.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as science or Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S).
- Ability to operate both independently and as a cooperative team member.
- Extensive experience in a scientific or medical laboratory setting, including personnel coordination in a matrix environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of OGTR regulatory standards and experience in a PC2 containment facility.

The MDHS OH&S and Laboratory Management team collaborates with all faculty members to enhance process improvements and risk management, ensuring the well-being of staff and the regulatory integrity of the University. With various organizational units, including off-campus and hospital-embedded sites, Laboratory Managers play a pivotal role in OHS management by implementing safe work practices, providing training, and conducting regular hazard inspections to maintain a secure working environment.
