Job Description

Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher - Characterization of Plant Structure under Agrivoltaics

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The successful candidate will work on a project focused on characterizing the dynamic adaptation of plant structure under agrivoltaics. The project aims to understand the effects of dynamically altered light and precipitation patterns on selected traits of relevant agricultural and horticultural crops.

Responsibilities:

  • Characterize the diurnal and seasonal dynamics of changes in canopy structure under agrivoltaics
  • Deliver 3-dimensional data on plant canopies using commercial and experimental plant phenotyping methods and develop approaches to extract quantitative plant traits from 3-D point clouds
  • Understand the effects of dynamically altered light and precipitation patterns on selected traits of relevant agricultural and horticultural crops
  • Provide feedback to the research consortium on optimizing the balance between energy harvesting by the agrivoltaics installation and plant development underneath
  • Document the results and provide reports to the funding agency
  • Exploit the findings of the projects for scientific papers and present the results to the scientific community
  • Supervise students and student projects

Requirements:

  • Master Degree and PhD in plant sciences, plant biology, plant physiology, agriculture or other related disciplines
  • Solid background in whole plant eco-physiology, plant growth and/or plant architecture
  • Solid knowledge of methods to measure plant structure in the greenhouse and field
  • Knowledge in using and interpreting 3D data from the PlantEye instrument is highly welcome
  • Interest in working at the interface between applied and basic research
  • Proven record of publications in a related field and the ability to summarize scientific results in project reports and journals
  • Very good English communication and writing skills
