We are currently seeking a Rocket Propulsion Engineer (f/m/x) for our Responsive Space Cluster Competence Center (RSC3) in Trauen. The focus of this role is on the design of solid rocket motors aimed at minimizing the dispersion of sounding rockets through the implementation of spin-up motors.

What You Can Expect:

The proposed Master's thesis will take place within the launch segment of the Responsive Space Cluster Competence Center (RSC3) at DLR in Trauen. The RSC3 is dedicated to developing and demonstrating essential technologies that enable the rapid equipping of small satellites with payloads, facilitating their placement into Low-Earth Orbit and contributing to critical space infrastructure. The launch segment department is involved in:

  • Designing and advancing ground and airborne launch systems, launch facilities, and ground infrastructure.
  • Enhancing propulsion systems for Responsive Space launcher systems, including testing and validation using ground test facilities.
  • Developing upper stages for the precise deployment of small satellites into orbit and technology demonstration.

Sounding rockets are sub-orbital vehicles launched to conduct experiments in microgravity and to test flight hardware. During ascent, these rockets are rotated along their longitudinal axis using inclined fins and spin-up motors (SUM) mounted to the boost adapters between stages. The SUMs are compact solid rocket motors that generate torque and reduce the dispersion of uncontrolled multi-stage rocket systems. The objective is to create and design SUM concepts that meet the requirements of potential clients.

The following aspects will be addressed during the thesis:

  1. Conducting a literature review to identify the current state of the art.
  2. Developing a Python tool to estimate motor performance (e.g., thrust profile, mass, burn time, diameter, length, solid propellant composition) based on varying inputs.
  3. Identifying the most promising motor configurations for SUMs.
  4. Modeling the selected configuration(s) using CAD software (Catia V5).
  5. Designing and modeling a suitable test bench concept.
  6. Analyzing results and providing recommendations for further action.

What We Expect From You:
  • A background in Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • A passion for space engineering.
  • Proficiency in programming with Python and/or Catia V5.
  • Basic knowledge of rocket propulsion.
  • A structured and independent work approach.
  • Fluency in English and/or German.

Our Offer:

DLR stands for diversity, appreciation, and equality for all individuals. We promote autonomous work and the personal and professional development of our employees. Numerous training and development opportunities are available to support this. We are particularly committed to increasing the representation of women in science and leadership roles. Applications from individuals with disabilities are preferred when qualifications are equal.

Additional Information:
  • Duration: 6 Months
  • Compensation: Up to the German 5 TVöD
  • Reference Number: 94742
