At BASF Personal Care and Nutrition GmbH, our Global Intellectual Property Service Unit stands as one of the largest in-house IP departments in Germany. We oversee a comprehensive range of services related to patents, trademarks, trade secrets, copyrights, designs, and IP intelligence, in addition to managing all IP-related contracts. Our global team collaborates closely with various business units and research platforms, establishing a foundation for future business success and actively shaping BASF's competitive edge.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

We are seeking a skilled patent attorney to oversee a global patent portfolio specifically for plastic additives within our Performance Chemicals division. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in guiding the IP contract activities for your designated business unit.

  • You will align your legal advice with the strategic objectives of your division, acquiring comprehensive knowledge of the technologies, strategies, and goals pertinent to your area of responsibility.
  • You will evaluate BASF's research and development outcomes for their protectability and the potential value of securing such protections through industrial property rights.
  • Additionally, you will assess third-party intellectual property rights to determine their scope of protection and implications for potential BASF products and processes, providing informed counsel to the business unit on available options.
  • You will also be tasked with proactively advising internal stakeholders on leveraging industrial property rights to safeguard strategic business interests.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A completed degree in a scientific or technical discipline, along with formal training as a European Patent Attorney and/or patent assessor.
  • Several years of relevant professional experience within a patent department of an industrial firm, a patent law firm, or a patent office.
  • Proven expertise in scientific and/or patent law, particularly in the fields of chemistry or biochemistry; experience in drafting and negotiating IP contracts, as well as knowledge of licensing and contract law, is preferred.
  • A keen interest in digital technologies and their applications, along with strong business communication skills in English; proficiency in German is a plus.
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating IP-related agreements (such as license agreements, CDA/MTA, and R&D cooperation agreements) is advantageous.
