Bonn, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Deutschland ECMWF Vollzeit
About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Machine Learning Scientist to join our team at ECMWF. As a key member of our Earth System Modeling section, you will be responsible for developing and implementing cutting-edge machine learning techniques to support our climate modeling efforts.

Your primary focus will be on adapting and extending existing machine learning models to support the native ICON-grid and exploring the possibility of climate scenario interpolation and extrapolation. You will also support the overall AtmoRep model developments, including those in the WarmWorld sister project ICON-Rep-Model at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre.

In addition, you will implement downscaling of climate data using a generative machine learning model, utilizing high-resolution model output from DestinE, EERIE, and nextGEMS. You will also support the coordination of EXPECT's theme one data for new climate knowledge.

As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of exciting projects, including the RAINA project, which aims to develop a statically robust, large-scale machine learning model for weather applications that supports a very fine, km-scale resolution.

We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic individual with excellent analytic skills, interpersonal and communication skills, and experience developing in Python or similar languages. You should also have substantial experience with at least one deep learning framework, particularly development and tuning of new architectures and training protocols.

Experience with the evaluation of machine learning applications and running of large ablation studies to determine optimal architecture hyperparameters is also highly desirable. A background in Earth system modeling is welcome but not required. Experience with large HPC systems is an asset.

We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, as well as the opportunity to work on a wide range of exciting projects. If you are passionate about machine learning and climate modeling, we encourage you to apply.

About ECMWF

ECMWF is a world-leader in weather and environmental forecasting, serving our members and the wider community with global weather predictions and data critical for understanding and solving the climate crisis. We function as a 24/7 research and operational centre with a focus on medium and long-range predictions, holding one of the largest meteorological data archives in the world.

We have a strong partnership with the European Union and have been entrusted with the implementation and operation of the Destination Earth Initiative and the Climate Change and Atmosphere Monitoring Services of the Copernicus Programme. Other areas of work include High Performance Computing and the development of digital tools that enable ECMWF to extend provision of data and products covering weather, climate, air quality, fire and flood prediction and monitoring.

We are a multi-site organisation, with a main office in Reading, UK, a data centre/supercomputer in Bologna, Italy, and a large presence in Bonn, Germany. We appreciate the need for flexibility in the way our staff work and have adopted a hybrid work model that allows flexibility to staff to mix office working and teleworking, including away from the duty station for up to 10 days/month (within the area of our member states and co-operating states).

About the Projects

The WarmWorld project develops the next generation of climate models and the required computational infrastructure for this, funded by the German federal ministry for education and research. The ICON-Rep project adapts the existing AtmoRep model for WarmWorld data and applications. ICON-Rep-Data focuses on the model development and climate scenarios. The sister project ICON-Rep-Data targets the compression of high-resolution data using AtmoRep, with both models being linked through the use of AtmoRep.

The EXPECT project develops a prototype operational capability for integrated attribution and prediction of climate phenomena by exploiting novel data and technologies to provide trustworthy assessments and predictions of regional climate change including extremes, funded by the European Union through a Horizon project. The open position supports the project through a machine learning-based downscaling application.

RAINA is a joint project by ECMWF, the University of Bonn, Forschungszentrum Jülich, and the German Weather Service (DWD). It is funded by the German federal ministry for education and research. The objective of RAINA is to develop a foundation model for weather and demonstrate its skill for short-term, high-resolution weather forecasting, in particular with respect to high-impact extreme events. Training data is provided by the German Weather Service with the core model development taking place at ECMWF. The University of Bonn will explore the integration of a generative diffusion model while the Forschungszentrum Jülich and the German Weather Service will lead the development of the downstream application.

Main Duties and Key Responsibilities
  • Adapt the existing AtmoRep model to support the native ICON-grid and explore the possibility to do climate scenario interpolation and extrapolation
  • Support overall AtmoRep model developments, including for in the WarmWorld sister project ICON-Rep-Model at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre
  • Implement downscaling of climate data using a generative machine learning model using high-resolution model output from DestinE, EERIE, and nextGEMS
  • Support coordination of EXPECT's theme one data for new climate knowledge
  • Adapt the existing AtmoRep model for the RAINA project to support data at different resolutions and with very high spatio-temporal frequencies
  • Train and optimize the developed model at scale to ensure its skill, in particular a robust representation of extreme events
  • Work with the project partners to integrate a diffusion model and fine-tune the RAINA core model for nowcasting applications at the German Weather Service (DWD)
What We Are Looking For
  • Dedicated and enthusiastic about teamwork but also self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision, taking responsibility for the project
  • Excellent analytic skills to analyse problems and methodologically develop potential solutions and empirically evaluate them
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and ability for efficient documentation and communication of scientific results
  • Significant experience developing in Python or similar languages, and the use of software version control and best practices for software development
  • Substantial experience with at least one deep learning framework (usually either PyTorch or JAX), in particular development and tuning of new architectures and training protocols
  • Experience with the evaluation of machine learning applications and running of large ablation studies to determine optimal architecture hyperparameters
  • A background in Earth system modelling is welcome but not required. Experience with large HPC systems is an asset

We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, as well as the opportunity to work on a wide range of exciting projects. If you are passionate about machine learning and climate modeling, we encourage you to apply.
