Project Overview

The Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled candidate to undertake a Master Thesis project focused on the removal of uranium from contaminated groundwater using photovoltaic-powered nanofiltration (PV-NF) technology.

Background

Uranium contamination of groundwater is a significant threat to human health, and the provision of safe drinking water is a critical challenge in many parts of the world. PV-NF technology has shown promise as a viable solution for the removal of uranium from contaminated water sources.

Project Objectives

  • Conduct field-based experiments to evaluate the removal of uranium from real water sources using a mobile pilot-scale PV-NF system.
  • Collect and analyze water samples using state-of-the-art facilities, including inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for uranium analysis.
  • Analyze experimental data and contribute to the writing of a joint research publication.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will be studying for a Master's degree in Chemical, Process, Environmental Engineering, or a related field. They will have a strong interest in research, basic knowledge of water chemistry, water treatment processes, and membrane technology, as well as excellent writing and communication skills in English.

Working Environment

The project will be hosted by the Institute for Advanced Membrane Technology (IAMT) at KIT, which is one of the largest research institutions worldwide. The research team is international, and the language of communication is English.
