ROLE OVERVIEW

The Lead Counsel, Compliance and Regulatory Affairs will deliver essential legal guidance on regulations affecting the beauty industry and related compliance issues across Wella Company's product range. This role involves advising business units and cross-functional teams on various regulatory compliance activities, particularly concerning labeling and marketing claims.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide legal counsel to business and cross-functional teams (including R&D, Marketing, and Regulatory Affairs) on a comprehensive range of legal matters within the beauty and cosmetics sector, focusing on:
    • Adherence to federal and state regulatory frameworks in the U.S. and across the Americas, including FTC regulations, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and state-specific laws.
    • Compliance with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) claims related to packaging and corporate messaging.
    • Understanding and implementing packaging regulations as outlined by relevant authorities.
    • Development and evaluation of product attribute claims and marketing assertions for hair and nail products.
    • Assistance with product quality issues and recalls.
    • Offer legal insights on regulatory and marketing initiatives, particularly those intersecting with primary support activities.
    • Collaborate with external legal counsel as needed, especially regarding compliance in various regions.
    • Oversee and manage all litigation and industry challenges related to regulatory, marketing, and labeling issues.
    • Monitor and assess regulatory trends and litigation, formulating strategic responses for internal stakeholders.
    • Work alongside Regulatory, R&D, and Marketing teams to develop and refine regulatory review policies and procedures.
    • Act as the legal liaison for the Communications and ESG teams, reviewing all relevant materials.
    • Provide collaborative support to other legal department members in related areas.
    • Engage with government regulatory agencies as necessary on behalf of the company.
    • Participate in industry trade associations to stay informed on sector issues and represent the company at relevant events.
    • Partner with business units to develop and implement regulatory compliance policies and training.
    • Consult with all organizational levels, including senior management, to identify critical legal issues and provide comprehensive analyses and solutions.
    • Manage external legal counsel as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensed attorney in CA or NY (or eligibility to obtain in-house counsel license) with a J.D. from a prestigious law school and outstanding academic credentials.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a leading law firm or corporate legal department.
  • Significant experience in advising on cosmetic regulatory matters, including litigation contexts.
  • Proficiency in evaluating scientific and technical data to support product safety and claims validation.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; a collaborative team player who can effectively engage with business partners.
  • Adept at navigating complex, matrixed environments.
  • Strong ability to identify business and legal issues, applying practical, business-oriented problem-solving approaches.
  • Demonstrated strategic and creative thinking in addressing complex legal challenges.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and efficient with strong follow-through capabilities.
  • A genuine interest in understanding the business and contributing as part of an interdisciplinary team.
