Researcher in Ecological Assessment of Additive Manufacturing

In collaboration with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT offers an opportunity to engage in a thesis project.
Additive manufacturing processes, such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), enable near-net-shape production of components, enhancing functional integration while minimizing material usage. This approach is pivotal for advancing sustainability in future product development and manufacturing processes. Unlike traditional manufacturing methods, the tool-free production of components presents significant ecological and economic advantages.
The thesis will focus on developing a methodology to assess the ecological impact of various additive manufacturing processes.
While knowledge of additive manufacturing and sustainability management is beneficial, it is not a prerequisite.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting research on current ecological assessment methods and additive manufacturing processes
- Creating an evaluation framework and comparing key metrics for additive manufacturing
- Assessing ecological impacts in comparison to conventional manufacturing processes
- Formulating recommendations based on findings
- Documenting the research outcomes
Qualifications:
- Enrollment in a technical or scientific degree program (e.g., mechanical engineering, materials science, physics)
- Interest in applied research and development
- Strong commitment, creativity, and an independent, reliable work ethic
- Proficiency in German
