Mechanical Engineering Technician

Join our dynamic Instrumentation Product Design team, where Hardware Test Engineering takes center stage in crafting innovative optomechanical instruments and custom test equipment. As a valuable member, you will leverage your mechanical engineering expertise to conceptualize, define specifications, and contribute to developing precision mechanical test apparatus. Your role is pivotal in bringing to life the test solutions that drive the evolution of cutting-edge modules for the next generation of optical components and products.
We're looking for someone capable of solving problems independently, with experience in CAD and, ideally, with several years of hands-on experience in mechanical production or a lab, preferably in the optics and/or precision mechanics industry.
You'll work with a top US Tech company in Munich, dealing directly with the customer team in a very agile environment. The customer is looking for a strong, hands-on, proactive mentality, a passion for engineering, and motivation to learn.
**Responsibilities include the following**:
- Design and implement test fixtures, production jigs, mounting brackets, alignment systems, etc.
- Develop CAD models for basic components and prototype/implement them on your own.
- Modify and improve current concepts for testing equipment.
- Prepare basic production drawings for other teams and effectively communicate with potential manufacturing vendors.
- Participate in design validation and characterization during prototype bring-up and product deployment.
- Production station, fixture, characterization systems, motion stage incorporation, DUT/Instrument alignment system setup, custom optomechanics part design, etc.
- Bring instruments and lab support, material procurement, prototype testing, 3D printing, reporting, experiments, validation, etc.
- Perform failure analysis and design of experiments (DOEs) to reach design solutions and corrective actions for things already in place.
- Design mounts for DUT and instrumentation on fixtures and machines using adhesives, friction, or vacuum.
- Station and lab setup, basic shipment coordination(for parts included in your designs), equipment inventories and supplies, security and access, lab safety, and policy compliance.
- Submit and track purchase requests for the IPD team for new DOE and station development materials.
- Operate and maintain lab equipment, including electrical tools, 3D printers, etc.
**Requirements**:
- **First and most important is direct hands-on experience with prototyping, assembly, and testing. Not team supervision.**
- Familiarity with electro-mechanical systems is required.
- Experience with 3D CAD software: Siemens NX (preferable), SolidWorks, ProEngineer, etc.
- Experience in the design and implementation of basic test apparatus
- **Experience in GD&T, alignment datum setup, DFM, and DFA.**
- A basic understanding of kinematic constraints for moving parts.
- Ability to communicate well with cross-functional and cross-company team members and be able to collaborate to achieve project goals efficiently.
- **Experience with precision motion stages, optical mounting techniques, kinematic constraints, etc.**
**Education and Experience**:
- Educational background as a technician.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical production or lab, preferably in the optical/optomechanical and/or precision equipment industry.
