We look forward to recruiting a creative and engaged scientist to extent IGB’s spatial ecological expertise in large-scale spatially explicit research on freshwater ecosystems and their management. An important focus of the institute involves research on the effects of climate, land-use change and urbanisation on biodiversity, community composition and ecosystem functioning of aquatic systems. We are committed to open science, and this position aims at advancing data science including novel ways to analyse, process and share ecological research data across aquatic realms, research infrastructures, and disciplines. Collaborative and integrative research is strongly encouraged as well as engagement and leadership in national and international networks. Assets facilitating this research include unique complementary data resources to store and share experimental, field and lab biotic and abiotic data.

**Your responsibilities**:

- Development of an independent research group expanding an innovative research program in freshwater ecology involving large-scale, spatially explicit aquatic biodiversity analysis. The research profile preferentially includes aspects of connectivity, e.g. across scales and/or ecosystem boundaries.
- An ambitious integration into IGB’s research program with a strong collaborative component and high international visibility as well as a proactive contribution to the institute’s open science commitment.

**Your profile**:

- Doctoral degree in quantitative ecology, biostatistics, aquatic or environmental sciences, geography, or a related field.
- Excellent expertise in large-scale spatial freshwater biodiversity analyses integrating taxonomic and functional diversity.
- Strong modelling expertise in a spatially explicit context, preferably considering aspects of connectivity.
- Strong experience in working with large data sets and in database management; experience on software development and use of open-source tools is of advantage.
- Strong publication and project acquisition track record commensurate with career stage.
- Experience with research supervision commensurate with career stage.
- Excellent English language skills in both oral and written communication.
- Excitement to collaborate in a team of aquatic scientists with diverse backgrounds.

The position is full time. It is based at IGB’s Department of Community and Ecosystem Ecology. Salary is paid according to the German salary scheme for the public sector (TVöD Bund E14).
