The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The position is tied to project:
**“Stochastic gradient methods for almost sure state constraints for optimal control of gas flow under uncertainty”,**

a subproject of the collaborative research center _TRR 154: Mathematical Modeling, Simulation and Optimization Using the Example of Gas Networks_. The collaborative research center is an interdisciplinary endeavor between the Weierstrass Institute, Humboldt University of Berlin, Technical University of Berlin, Technical University of Darmstadt, and Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen Nuremberg.

The goal of this project is the development of stochastic gradient methods for the treatment of almost sure state constraints. Such constraints arise for example in the nomination validation of gas networks under uncertain demands but also play a role in the transition towards future hydrogen networks. A focus of the project is the consideration of sequences of relaxed problems intertwined with the stochastic gradient method and a rigorous mathematical convergence analysis of the resulting methods.

The appointment is limited until 30.06.2026. The reduced work schedule is 29.25 hours per week, and the salary is according to the German TVoeD Bund scale.

**"Stochastic gradient methods for almost sure state constraints for optimal control of gas flow under uncertainty"**

ein Teilprojekt des Sonderforschungsbereichs TRR 154: Mathematische Modellierung, Simulation und Optimierung am Beispiel von Gasnetzen. Der Sonderforschungsbereich ist ein interdisziplinäres Vorhaben zwischen dem Weierstraß-Institut, der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, der Technischen Universität Berlin, der Technischen Universität Darmstadt und der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.

Ziel dieses Projektes ist die Entwicklung von stochastischen Gradientenmethoden zur Behandlung von nahezu sicheren Zustandsrandbedingungen. Solche Nebenbedingungen treten z.B. bei der Nominierungsvalidierung von Gasnetzen unter unsicherer Nachfrage auf, spielen aber auch beim Übergang zu zukünftigen Wasserstoffnetzen eine Rolle. Ein Schwerpunkt des Projekts ist die Betrachtung von Sequenzen entspannter Probleme in Verbindung mit der stochastischen Gradientenmethode und eine rigorose mathematische Konvergenzanalyse der resultierenden Methoden.

Wir suchen KandidatInnen mit einem Master-Abschluss in Mathematik oder einem eng verwandten Gebiet mit einem starken Hintergrund in Optimierung und partiellen Differentialgleichungen. Vorkenntnisse in stochastischer Optimierung, optimaler Steuerung oder stochastischer Analyse sind von Vorteil.

Die Stelle ist bis zum 30.06.2026 befristet. Die reduzierte Arbeitszeit beträgt 29,25 Stunden pro Woche, die Vergütung erfolgt in Anlehnung an den TVöD Bund.
