Scope of workfull-time position suitable for part-time**Responsibilities**:
Duties primarily include teaching and research. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
- and submeso-scale ocean biogeochemical processes in the km-scale configurations of the model ICON. The focus of this position will be on independent development and improvement of HAMOCC within the framework of ICON, as well as advising and supporting group members working with HAMOCC.
Responsibilities will include:
- development of HAMOCC within the new-coupled ICON Earth system model, designing numerical experiments with a focus on improving biogeochemical processes and the carbon cycle
- independently setting up and carrying out simulations with HAMOCC as well as contributing to data analysis
- evaluating the performance of HAMOCC against observations
- performing km-scale coupled simulations with HAMOCC as part of ICON
- supporting group members working with HAMOCC in general and in particular in third-party projects
- contribute to coordinating model development work and incorporate new processes in HAMOCC
- contributing and independent writing of research proposals
- representation of the working group at the meetings on modeling strategies and model development (e.g. NatESM)
- disseminating the results through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at conferences
The position provides for 8 teaching hours per week.
**Profile**:
A university degree in a relevant field, plus doctorate.
A PhD in oceanography, geoscience, environmental sciences, or a related field is required for this position.
- compelling understanding of ocean biochemical dynamics, in particular regarding its role in Earth’s climate
- working experience as scientific programmer in the disciplines of ocean biogeochemical cycle modeling and Earth system modeling
- experience with HAMOCC, ICON and MPI-ESM; skill in model development
- experience in setting up and running coupled simulations with HAMOCC in ICON in km-scale and coarser resolutions
- strong programming skills in Fortran, post-processing and visualization software (e.g., python, CDO), as well as experience in handling large data sets
- experience in improving code performance, i.e. by porting codes to GPUs
- strong communication and organizational skills and an ability to effectively communicate results of scientific research to project members and international colleagues
