**Our Profile**:
The combustion group of the department for industrial furnaces and heat engineering (IOB) is looking for support by a student assistant in the area of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of industrial furnaces. In the context of two EU funded projects with numerous partners from research and industry, IOB is working on the decarbonization of the high-temperature processes in the steel and aluminium sector by the use of hydrogen as fuel. Especially at the energy intensive processes of melting and heat treatment, the use of hydrogen offers great potential for the reduction of CO2 emissions. To further increase process efficiencies, combustion with oxyfuel is investigated. Numerical simulations provide detailed insights into the high-temperature processes and hence, are an essential tool for development of components, systems, and processes. At IOB, RANS simulations are carried out, which accurately represent single burners as well as entire furnaces by appropriate modelling of turbulence, heat transport, combustion, emissions and scale formation. In this context, various activities in the areas of geometry preparation, meshing, modelling and performance of CFD simulations arise. Topics can by emphasized according to personal capability and preference.
**Your Profile**:
- At least 3rd semester in a technical course
- A good command of German and English
- Reliable and solution-oriented way of working
- Experience in CAD, CFD (Ansys fluent), python or matlab are advantageous
**Your Duties and Responsibilities**:
- CAD geometry preparation and meshing
- RANS CFD simulations of single burners and entire industrial furnaces
- Literature research, model development and implementation for radiation heat transport, NOx-emission and scale formation
**What We Offer**:
The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of 6 months.
The option to extent the contract is available.
This is a part-time contract position.
The standard weekly hours will be 6-10 hours.
The salary is based on the RWTH Guidelines for Student and Graduate Assistants.
The position corresponds to a pay grade of 12,00 € per hour.
