The job

Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) pollution is currently a hot issue in the field of water treatment. Currently, many studies have reported that fluorinated polymers can quickly adsorb PFAS through a special fluorine-fluorine interaction effect on top of the hydrophobic effect. However, the specific contribution of the fluorine-fluorine effect to PFAS adsorption is still unclear. Therefore, we are doing a study to synthesize a variety of polymers using fluorinated and non-fluorinated monomers with different carbon chain lengths to distinguish the hydrophobic effect and fluorine-fluorine effect, and further clarify the potential of fluorinated polymers in water treatment. Subsequently, for PFAS with different chain lengths, the combination of hydrophobic monomers with different carbon chain lengths and cationic monomers will be optimized to obtain the best performance, and attempts will be made to guide the synthesis of polymers and predict the removal effect of PFAS through machine learning.

The position to prepare the thesis will be supervised at the site in Leipzig. Thesis lab work should be conducted for a duration of at least 3 month with starting date within November 2024 to January 2025.

Your tasks

In this project, you will have opportunity to synthesize various polymers and test their performance for the adsorption of PFAS. The detailed tasks include:

- Synthesize and optimize the polymers
- Determination of PFAS concentrations using LC-MS
- Study the impact of various parameters on performance of polymers
- Data evaluation and report in exchange with your supervisors

**Profile**:

- Studies in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or similar
- Careful and structured work and previous hands-on experience in laboratory activities
- Ability to work independently
- English language
