The job

In the Macroecology & Vegetation Science group of UFZ’s Department of Community Ecology in the city of Halle (Saale), a scientific position is available within the flexpool project PaDRE. The scientist will disentangle how species range characteristics, functional, and phylogenetic diversity aspects predict the extinction risk of plants across regions and species. The project is co-supervised by Sonja Knapp (UFZ), Marten Winter (iDiv), and Erik Welk (MLU Halle-Wittenberg), and includes significant amounts of time in each of their labs.

Your tasks
- Selection and harmonisation of plant species lists from national red lists and GIFT
- Selection and harmonisation of plant trait data from trait databases (e.g., TRY, GIFT)
- Production of basic species occurrence/distribution layers of combined information from ranges, plot level, and point records (based on databases like
GBIF, sPlotOpen, EVA, and GIFT amongst others)
- Production of detailed species ranges for selected species with species distribution modelling ensemble methods
- Testing the effects of range characteristics, functional, and phylogenetic diversity aspects on the extinction risk of plants using advanced statistical modelling
- Writing and publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals
- Presenting results at national and international conferences

**Profile**:

- Scientific University degree (Diploma/ M.Sc.) in a project-related field (e.g., Ecology, Biology), a doctoral degree is desirable
- At least three years of experience in research and in the publication of scientific results
- Excellent knowledge of the R language and environment for statistical computing and graphics
- Excellent skills in (macroecological) statistical modelling
- Experience in Bayesian modelling is appreciated
- Affinity to work with heterogeneous data
- Experience in working with species distribution data and / or red list data is welcome
- Curiosity and openness to novel research fields and new analytical techniques
- High level of personal responsibility in the work
- Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written)
- Team-oriented individuals with interest and ability in interdisciplinary research and organisational skills
