A vacancy for an Optical Architect (d/f/m) has arisen within Airbus Defence and Space GmbH in Ottobrunn. You will join a multicultural team of engineers specialized in the development of optical (sub-)systems working for the Earth Observation & Science projects within Space Systems. Those developments cover instruments for ESA, CNES, DLR and EU programmes from UV to Thermal Infra-Red spectral range like LIDARs (ATLID, MERLIN), the Multi-Spectral Instruments (Sentinel-2 MSI, Sentinel-4, Sentinel-5) from the Copernicus programme, IR instruments (LSTM, TRISHNA), meteorological instruments (IASI-NG and METimage) embarked on MetOp-SG, instruments for scientific missions like EUCLID, cameras embarked on LEO and GEO satellites, as well as national eyes-only programmes. Those instruments are developed in Toulouse (France), Ottobrunn and Friedrichshafen (Germany).

Your tasks will include the definition and development of the optical architecture within the projects in phase B2/C/D, contribution to future programmes in phase 0 or A/B1 for the optical domain, follow up of the procurement of optical equipment (components and subsystems) subcontracted to suppliers and preparation of the future by developing new enabling optical technologies through internal and/or external R&D studies.

**Main tasks & accountabilities**:
Your main tasks and responsibilities as Optical Architect include:

- Act as principal point of contact (internal and external) for all related technical matters in the optical domain
- Support the systems engineer in all technological, development, design, verification, technical risk, cost and schedule aspects related to the optical system
- Responsible for the optical design, optical analysis, including stray light analysis within an optical instrument
- Coordination of all engineering and AIT activities related to the optical subsystem with all disciplines such as Optical, Mechanical, Thermal (Cryo), Cleanliness, Detection-chain, Electrical, AIT, etc.
- Definition and development of the optical subsystem architecture incl. verification following defined processes for the space-borne instruments within the projects in phase B2/C/D
- Derive/consolidate/maintain optical subsystem requirements in compliance with higher level applicable requirements (Instrument and System Level Requirements, e.g., SRD, IRD) and the corresponding verification plan
- Provide support to Tender Evaluation Boards for Optical Subsystems
- Follow up the procurement of optical equipment (components and subsystems) development subcontracted to suppliers by ensuring the on-time, on-cost, on-quality delivery
- Review and assessment of optical subsystem data packages, test and verification plans/reports
- Contribute to future programmes in phase 0 or A/B1 for the optical domain
- Participate to suppliers’ performances Return of Experience (RETEX) and lessons learnt to be aggregated in transverse with other projects and within the Optics Multi-Functional Team (MFT)
- Contribute to internal or external R&D proposals by proposing new ideas and/or prepare documents for R&D request submission/tenders
- Take additional tasks as required in the interest of the department

**Desired skills and qualifications**:

- Master’s degree or PhD in Physics or Optical Engineering or equivalent
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to understand complex optical systems and acquired methods for selection of best design solutions
- Experience with commercial optical software like for instance CodeV, Zemax or FRED and programming skills software (Matlab, Python, etc.)
- Profound knowledge and industrial experience in optical components: mirrors polishing, photonics, gratings, fibers, laser, coatings etc.
- Experience in the management of suppliers and subcontractors for optical components
- Knowledge about conception, development, production and testing of space equipments, including optical alignment and verification strategy
- Abilities in innovation, improvement and costs optimization actions
- Customer-oriented and solution-oriented way of working, while defending the interests of Airbus
