- and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering techniques, complementarily to the current analytical methods used in the manuscript studies field.

**Responsibilities**:
Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Specific Duties

Further responsibilities include:

- literature survey
- formulating specific cross-disciplinary research questions
- developing innovative experimental X-ray scattering based approaches to complement current analytical methods of antique paper identification and raw materials characterization
- micro and macroscopic analyses of paper in selected manuscripts both in situand in the laboratory
- preparation of microscopic slides
- collecting and interpreting data to answer specific research questions
- publication of results in peer-reviewed journals
- supervising graduate students
- assistance with the organization and coordination of the project

The primary focus of research within this position will be identification and characterization of paper in:

- mock-up samples of traditionally-made paper with known and documented technology and raw materials
- selected manuscripts preserved in museums and libraries and manufactured in the areas relevant to our mock-up samples (see above)

The PhD student will undertake detailed experimental work towards understanding both the properties of raw materials used and technologies of paper production for manuscripts using established characterization tools like various optical and digital microscopic techniques to identify writing supports.
- and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering techniques to investigate the nano-structure of papers. Here, the focus is to develop a protocol to identify different papers and paper production techniques based on the X-ray scattering signals. These X-ray experiments will be carried in close collaboration with DESY (PETRA III synchrotron).

**Requirements**:
A university degree in a relevant field.

Preferred is a degree in Archaeometry, Physics, Chemistry, Nano Science, Materials Science, Cultural Heritage Science or a related discipline. Furthermore, beneficial are
- experience in scientific data analysis and programming techniques are highly recommended to deal with the X-ray data sets
- experience in X-ray scattering techniques such as Small
- and/or Wide-Angle X-ray scattering is beneficial
- experience in working with manuscripts (not mandatory)
- prior knowledge of the production methods, properties and preservation problems of antique paper manuscripts
- excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
- ability to work independently and in a team, with good organisational and communicative skills
