HiWi for a collaborative project on Interpersonal Synchrony (M/F/div)

The Optics and Sensing Laboratory and the Perceiving Systems Department at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems have an open position for a student research assistant (HiWi) to join an ongoing collaborative research project with the Department of Psychology of LMU (Clinical Psychology and Psychological Treatment) on interpersonal synchrony.

About us

We are creating highly realistic human and animal avatars for use in research, film, virtual reality, biology, and medicine. Using unique 3D & 4D capture facilities and computer vision methods, we are modeling humans non-verbal behavior. We develop algorithms to estimate human shape and motion in images, videos, and RGB-D sequences. Our approaches define the current state of the art, and we are constantly improving these methods and systems to achieve better accuracy.

About the Project

The project aims to develop a novel computer vision tool for the automatic assessment of Interpersonal Synchrony. This approach (among others) will be applied in psychotherapy contexts to measure non-verbal behavior as a relevant mechanism of change for successful treatment outcome.

**Your tasks**:

- Conduct literature reviews about interpersonal synchrony and its assessment methods
- Set up a labeling procedure to rate interpersonal synchrony in psychotherapeutic dyads
- Label interpersonal synchrony of psychotherapeutic sessions
- Participate in eye-tracking and bio-feedback studies
- Work 10-20 hours per week

**Your profile**:

- Bachelor’s degree and strong academic background in life sciences (e.g., psychology, neurosciences, and biology)
- Good oral and written communication skills in English
- Basic computer skills (e.g., software installation, MS office, data management
- A natural team player and detail-oriented person

- Basic knowledge of programming scripts (e.g., python, R, or Matlab)
- Basic experience with video editing tools (e.g., DaVinci)
- Basic experience with biofeedback equipment (e.g., Nexus10)
- Basic experience with eye-tracking software (e.g., Tobii Pro)
