**Position Overview**:
The turret mechanic is a skilled professional responsible for maintaining, repairing, and ensuring the optimal functioning of turrets. Turrets consist of self-propelled field artillery cannon weapon systems, including automotive, turret, carriage-mounted armament, associated fire control systems, and chemical protection subsystems; and components on the M109-series self-propelled Howitzers, M992 Field Artillery Ammunition Carrier (FAAC) and M88A1 Medium Track Recovery Vehicle. The role of a turret mechanic involves a combination of mechanical, electrical, and technical skills to perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs.

**Key Responsibilities**:
1. Maintenance and Inspection:

- Regularly inspect turrets to identify wear, damage, or any potential malfunctions.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks to ensure turrets are in proper working condition.
- Lubricate moving parts, clean components, and replace worn-out or damaged parts as needed.

2. Repair and Troubleshooting:

- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in turrets.
- Conduct thorough troubleshooting to identify the root cause of malfunctions.
- Repair or replace faulty components such as motors, gears, sensors, wiring, and hydraulic systems.

3. Calibration and Alignment:

- Ensure proper alignment of turrets to maintain accuracy and precision.
- Calibrate aiming systems to ensure accurate targeting and firing of weapons.
- Use specialized tools and equipment to adjust sensors, optics, and targeting mechanisms.

4. Documentation:

- Keep detailed records of maintenance activities, repairs performed, and parts replaced.
- Provide records to operators in order to maintain a database of turret maintenance schedules and historical data.

5. Testing and Validation:

- Test turrets after repairs or maintenance to ensure proper functionality.

6. Safety and Compliance:

- Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines while working on turrets.
- Ensure compliance with regulations and standards related to turret maintenance and operation.

7. Collaboration:

- Collaborate with other mechanics, engineers, and technical staff to solve complex issues.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding maintenance status and potential concerns.

**Applicable Skills, Knowledge and Experience**:

- High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training in mechanical or related field is preferred
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Must have a minimum of 3 years relevant experience
- Possess a good working knowledge of turret equipment maintenance programs, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and electronic controls
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and schematics, policies, nomenclature, work methods, and other established guidelines
- An understanding of the needs of the organization serviced
- Experience with precision tools and equipment
- Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high levels of accuracy and quality
- Knowledge of safety protocols and regulations related to mechanical workLift on an occasional basis a maximum of 50 pounds with frequent or constant lifting of 40 pounds
- Possess a valid state or government driver’s license
- Must be able to pass pre-employment and background checks related to the position
- Ability to work in various environments (including outdoor settings and confined spaces).

**Additional requirements**:

- Must be able to stand for at least two continuous hours
- Must be able to climb in and out of military vehicles and related equipment
- Must be able to work in cramped areas for at least two continuous hours
- Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions to include intense heat, heavy wind, blowing sand, heavy rain, and snow and sleet
