**Unser Profil**:
The Department for Industrial Furnaces and Heat Engineering (IOB) at RWTH Aachen University is one of the world's leading research institutes in industrial furnace technology and is particularly focussed on sustainable thermal process technology in material production. In this context, research topics of process and plant optimisation in the areas of production, processing and recycling of iron and steel, non-ferrous metals as well as glass and ceramics are dealt with in a total of five scientific working groups.

Our partners not only include renowned research institutes but also well-known companies, especially from the steel, aluminum and glass sector as well as mechanical and plant engineering. Cooperation also takes place on an international level, currently especially through cooperative projects with institutes and companies from Europe.

**Ihr Profil**:
The prerequisites for joining the IOB are a successfully completed technical university degree (Master or equivalent) in the field of mechanical engineering, materials engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, environmental engineering, process engineering, sustainable energy supply or comparable fields of study as well as fluency in written and spoken English. If possible, you have in-depth knowledge in the fields of heat and mass transfer, fluid dynamics and energy balances. Methodical knowledge in the fields of design, numerical simulation and modelling are also desirable as well as an affinity to electrical engineering.

You have a high level of independence and commitment. You would like to develop and realise your own ideas. You enjoy working in a team, but can also concentrate on writing scientific articles on your own, for example.

**Ihre Aufgaben**:
As a research assistant / associate at the IOB, you can realize your potential in the following fields of activity, with which we offer a varied spectrum of theoretical, practical and organizational work:

- Research _- The digitalization of industry has been significantly advanced in recent years and remains the focus of research. Plant models, which can map and predict both the plant and component behavior during the process, are becoming increasingly complex and thus represent reality in ever greater detail. In thermoprocess technology, this is currently leading to material-oriented heat treatments and reheating. Your work focuses on the development of plant and process models and their interlinking to form process chain models for thermal processing plants. The model development based on FDM is supported by CFD simulations of the boundary conditions where necessary and validated using real plants. Optimized process control can save primary energy and minimize material loss. It is also possible to model the influence of new heating concepts. This makes it possible to make a direct contribution to the defossilization of energy-intensive industries on the basis of modern heating concepts, including those based on renewable energies. This also includes the publication of your scientific results, e.g. through presentations at national and international conferences and publications in high-quality journals.
- Industry _- In addition to research activities, cooperation with industry is another important field of activity. In consulting projects you are involved in performing process analyses for our customers. Here, experimental methods (in the plant or at the IOB) as well as process modelling and numeric methods can be used. Optimization potentials or strategic issues, such as technology changes, are derived from the analyses and implemented. Together, future-oriented concepts are developed in this way. In addition, you will have the opportunity to expand and deepen your contacts in industry.
- Advanced training _- At national and international conferences, seminars and congresses, you have the opportunity to transfer the knowledge gained from research into industrial practice. At the events and training courses for leadership, an exchange of expertise is possible in order to develop new ideas and establish contacts.
