The job
The frequency and severity of droughts are increasing in central Europe, impacting grasslands. From the farmers' point of view, this means a loss of yield. Farmers who use their hay themselves (e.g. as fodder) face shortages, while so-called net sellers, who produce more hay than they need themselves, may even benefit from the drought as they can sell their hay at higher prices.
There is currently no central, transparent market for hay in Europe. Instead, there are a variety of websites, wholesale buying houses or informal networks between neighbouring farmers through which surplus hay is distributed. The question is whether the introduction of a transparent hay market would lead to better pricing and distribution of hay, and thus better protection for farmers against drought.
To investigate this, we are looking for a highly motivated intern to develop an agent-based model that will allow us to compare different market structures (networks) for grassland farmers (agents) trading hay.
Your tasks
- Literature review on market structures and how to formalise them endogenously in agent-based models (ABMs)
- Conceptualise an ABM that represents hay trade between farmers for different market structures
- Implement this ABM in NetLogo
- Analyse the impact of different market structures on farmer’s drought resilience and the overall hay production

**Profile**:
- Study program in the field of (agricultural) economics, physics, maths, or similar
- Experience in (agent-based) modelling
