**PhD researcher: Present and future fire weather extremes across Europe The job**
The Department of Compound Environmental Risks at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ studies compound weather events, which are combinations of multiple weather and climate drivers that cause most climate-related impacts. As a specific case of compound events, high-impact wildfires are favored by concurrent hot, dry, and windy conditions across multiple locations. The newly established Emmy Noether Research Group on compound climate extremes (project ADVICE) is looking for a highly motivated PhD student who will exploit large ensemble climate model simulations to advance our understanding of fire weather extremes across European regions in a changing climate.
**Your tasks**
The PhD student will have the opportunity to interact with team members working on large ensemble simulations and wildfires in the Department, a well-known hub of international scientists studying compound weather and climate events.
- Study fire weather extremes in observations and available climate model simulations, with a focus on physical drivers.
- Assess future changes in fire weather extremes and their causes, including exploration of uncertainties in future projections.
- Compute fire weather index from selected regional climate models.
- Collaborate with project partners (for example, from ETH Zurich and the University of Dresden).
- Participate in the UFZ graduate school HIGRADE with options for targeted training.
- Publish the results in peer-reviewed papers and present them at national/international conferences.

**Your profile**
- A master degree in Physics, Data Science, Meteorology, Environmental Science, Mathematics, or related fields.
- Programming skills (Python, R, or similar).
- Experience with statistics (multivariate statistics is advantageous).
- Experience in working with climate data.
- Very good written and oral communication skills in English.
- Analytical skills and capability to think “out-of-the box”.
- Self-driven personality, able to work both independently and in a team.
- Experience with atmospheric physics or interest in understanding physical processes that cause weather/climate extremes.
- Experience with supercomputers or at least Linux systems and handling large datasets is advantageous.
