interactions between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and schizophrenia in the research group of Dr. Torsten
Lowin at the Department of Rheumatology, Düsseldorf in close collaboration with Prof. Dr. Carsten Korth
of the Institute of Neuropathology, both at the University Hospital Düsseldorf.

The major goal of our group is to characterize pathogenic mechanisms that drive rheumatic diseases
(with focus on rheumatoid arthritis), and to identify novel treatment strategies for this disease. Our
approaches include characterization of the signaling pathways with aberrant function in RA and
validation in animal models of RA.

In this project, we aim to understand the negative epidemiological correlation between Schizophrenia
and RA. We previously identified the regulator of G-protein signaling 1 (RGS1) to be decreased in
patients with schizophrenia but enhanced in patients with RA. We believe that this protein affects many
aspects of the immune response, e. g. the recruitment of immune cells and might therefore be a key
switch and possible therapeutic target in both diseases.

Dr. Lowin’s group is part of an international research group with members from different backgrounds,
including biologists and clinicians, and with close collaborations with researchers from other fields such
as bioinformatics, which ensures an interdisciplinary environment. We have unrestricted access to state
- of-the-art technologies including next generation sequencing, mass cytometry, advanced imaging
techniques and flow cytometry. We thus provide the prerequisites for conducting a challenging, but
highly rewarding PhD project.
from learning interdisciplinary techniques and will have a wide range of possibilities to interact and work
closely with clinical scientists. In addition, the team members will have opportunities to develop their
independent line of investigation for their future career. Certified allowance with animal experimentation
(e.g. FELASA B or equivalent) is preferred but not mandatory.
