Scientist Transmission Systems with Space

The department "Photonic Networks & Systems" (PN) is looking for support in the field of optical communications engineering and signal processing with a focus on optical communication systems with spatial multiplexing. As part of an internal Fraunhofer research project, novel optical fiber communication systems based on parallel transmission in different spatial paths are investigated here in close coordination with industry. This includes, for example, transmission over optical fibers with multiple cores or multiple propagation modes. Subsystems such as optical transmitters, receivers and amplifiers, as well as the complete transmission system in a spatial multiplex will be considered. The focus of the current job description is on setup, test, experimental and numerical validation as well as on the development of the required algorithms for digital signal processing. **What you will do**
- Construction, test, and validation of optical space multiplex communication systems in the laboratory and execution of measurement campaigns
- Development and testing of algorithms for digital signal processing in optical space division multiplex systems
- Numerical simulation of optical space division multiplex systems
- Presentation of R&D results in the form of project reports, journal articles, and presentations at conferences
- Supervision of master's and bachelor's theses
**What you bring to the table**
- Good knowledge of optical communications and digital signal processing, and good software skills (MATLAB, Python, LabView, VPITransmissionMaker).
- Experience in laboratory work and enjoy experimentation
- Excellent language skills in English
- Team spirit, a structured way of working, and the ability to independently develop ideas for new research activities
