The Immune-Microbiota Interactions Laboratory in the
**Department of Translational Rheumatology, Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine** at the University of Münster, Germany, is offering a project position on the role of the microbiome in autoimmunity at the earliest opportunity, initially limited to 3 years.

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our international research group to study host-microbiota interactions in the context of immunobiology and host barrier pathophysiology. The position is available at the earliest possible opportunity. Within the overall project we will investigate, if and how certain gut commensal bacteria leave the gut and contribute to the pathogenesis of systemic autoimmune diseases, in particular lupus. To test these hypotheses, we are studying human patient cohorts, related animal models, and various in vitro systems of host-microbiota interactions. We interrogate cohorts of lupus patients for gut microbial community structures and combine these efforts with mechanistic research on immune reactions towards these bacteria and gut barrier dysfunction.
The PhD project will involve the use of a wide range of experimental techniques that may include microbiological (strain isolation and identification, genetic manipulation), molecular biological / immunological (Western blot, RT-PCR, FACS, ELISA), microscopic and histological approaches (tissue histology, immunocyto
- and immunohistochemistry), human blood and tissue cultures, and research using various mouse models that are prone to autoimmune diseases and whose microbiomes are manipulated.
