The Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) in the Helmholtz Association is an international biomedical research center dedicated to understanding the molecular mechanisms of health and disease with the goal to devise new diagnostics and medicines. The MDC is a member of the Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest scientific organization, and offers an engaging research environment with cutting-edge research infrastructure. Currently, ~1250 employees and ~500 guest scientists work at the Berlin-Buch and Berlin-Mitte campuses. Our diverse workforce is a core strength that inspires creativity and innovation at the MDC.

The MDC’s Strategy Unit works closely with the Scientific Director, Administrative Director, and other members of scientific and departmental leadership to oversee the strategic development of the center. We are looking for a forward-thinking leader willing to work together with MDC leadership as Head of Strategy.
- Take responsibility for all strategic activities of the MDC including overseeing the development and implementation of a comprehensive long-term strategy aligning with our center’s vision and goals.
- Lead and manage a team of science managers, fostering a collaborative working environment that encourages and empowers.
- Collaborate closely with key stakeholders, including researchers, science leaders, department heads and external partners, to maximize impact and identify strategic areas for growth and development of our research program.
- Oversee the timely implementation and monitoring and evaluation of strategic projects across the MDC including the development of our research program, resource allocation, scientific controlling, recruitments and risk management.
- Develop and uphold relationships with government agencies, industry partners, and relevant funding bodies to secure support for key strategic initiatives.
- Oversee the MDC’s representation as a member in our various networks/alliances: the Helmholtz Association, EU-LIFE, BR-50.
- Maintain regular communication with the Directorate and oversee strategic reporting to relevant bodies (e.g., Helmholtz Association, German Federal Ministry of Research).
- Work proactively with MDC management and departments to develop and implement relevant policy in support of the MDC’s mission, vision and strategy.
- Provide strategic direction and advice to the MDC Directorate.
- Act as a communication intermediary, orchestrating the flow of information and decision-making procedures across the directorate and departmental leadership levels.
**Requirements**:
- Completed doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent), preferably in the life sciences, medicine, or adjacent fields
- Demonstrated leadership experience with a track record of successful collaboration
- Several years of experience in science management, project management, or business administration
- Strong conceptual skills, especially for strategy development and implementation as well as organization development and process optimization
- Strong and proactive communication skills with full professional proficiency in English and German
- Adaptability and resilience, willingness to work in a fast-paced environment
- Advanced analytical and critical thinking skills with an aptitude for handling complexity, staying organized and maintaining a high attention to detail
- Comfortable as a visible leader on campus and representing MDC within the Berlin-area science ecosystem
- An in-depth familiarity with relevant academic institutions, structures, and actors in Germany, Europe and beyond is strongly desired
- Experience in change management is desirable
