Internship - Sustainable Battery Recycling Study

**Position**:
**Internship topic - Exploring criteria and dimensions of Sustainable Battery Recycling in a study with high industry, academia and civil society engagement
**Problem**: Yet, all is not fine. In public discourse, the battery supply chain is considered problematic for social and environmental reasons. With an increasing focus from policymakers to scale battery manufacturing and catalyzing investments across the supply chain, **ensuring sustainable practices can be key to increasing public acceptance and regulatory support towards the industry.** Further, as the industry and policymakers look to expedite permitting for new facilities, promoting good practices and avoiding lapses is key.
**The Challenge**: Meanwhile, a **lack of globally agreed-on definitions and standards what “sustainable” batteries may challenge best practice industrial actors. **This holds true especially for battery recycling: through it, most battery materials may be circulated in the economy at high rates and low environmental and social impacts. However, processes are complex, diverse and at different stages of technological maturity, with widely diverging potentials for recovery efficiencies of the different battery materials and sustainability performance. Scopes of what makes up “recycling” differ, making sound comparisons difficult. **Consensus of what constitutes “sustainable battery recycling” are lacking. **More consistency and clarity could help create more support for battery recycling and a level playing field that supports the more sustainable and innovative players.
**Project set-up**: To address these challenges, **Systemiq is conducting a study on sustainable battery recycling with engagement of the scientific and civil society community** (including Transport & Environment and WWF), co-funded by a group of industry actors (such as Mercedes-Benz, GRS Batterien, Li-Cycle and BASF). Aim of the project is to develop and launch the independent study between July and September which creates a level playing field that helps identify sustainable practices, and highlighting possible policy and industry actions towards best-in-class recycling.
**The following activities would be in scope**:
**1) Describing the fundamentals of Battery Recycling**:Obtaining a literature-based overview of current recycling processes and their implications with focus on EU, the U.S., and East Asia
**2) Sustainability in battery recycling**:Exploring the status quo and optimal potentials by conducting a comparative mapping of ranges of environmental, social and economic performance of different recycling set-ups**
**3) Striving for the optimum**:Providing insights into possible strategies to support most sustainable practices via technological, political and business approaches
Together with our partners from industry and academia, we will outline the exact scope of this project together and challenge, as well as iterate it, during the project phase
**Requirements**:
- Master Student in (Sustainable) Management & Technology, Management & Innovation, Mechanical Engineering, Green Electronics, Materials Science and Engineering, Transportation Systems or similar
- Knowledge or prior experience in battery technologies, e-mobility or environmental assessments including LCAs is a plus
- Very good communication skills in English and German
- High degree of motivation and fast learning
- Passion for sustainability-related topics
