The Competence Center of Cultural Heritage Digitization at Fraunhofer IGD develops and automates 3D scanning technologies using structured light amongst others. Accurate and fast 3D scanning of high-detailed object surfaces is a crucial challenge when looking at the large number of objects waiting in museum archives to be digitized, or industrial digitization tasks.

**What you will do**

During the first task, a 2D test phase, you will get deeper into the field of hyperspectral imaging and get to know the camera and its output data structure. The goal of this research phase will also be to analyze different materials for their response in different wavelength domains.

For the next phase, there are three possible options:
One is the extension of one of our already existing high-detail geometry acquisition devices using the data from the hyperspectral camera, one goal here is, e.g., the extraction of hidden information from paintings.

The second one is the extension of an existing measurement device for optical material behavior, i.e. light-surface-interaction of objects. Here, the goal is to capture effects of changing wavelengths of incoming and resulting outgoing light.

The third one is research of 3D digitization of translucent objects, which currently is a challenge for conventional 3D scanning systems.

Furthermore, there is a potential task which targets the discrepancy between the low-resolution hyperspectral camera image on one side, and the high-resolution structure / texture camera on the other, with the goal of bringing both into the same perspective.

- Very good C++ programming skills
- Strong knowledge in mathematics and linear algebra
- Proficient English skills
- Precise, responsible, independent worker
- Experience in Computer Vision
- Experience with the frameworks Qt and OpenCV is advantageous

**What you can expect**

We have the state of the art in hyperspectral measurement at our disposal for research: imec SNAPSCAN VNIR with a spectral range of 470-900 nm, a spectral resolution of 150 bands, coupled with a spatial resolution of 7 MPx.

After an initial state-of-the-art research followed by a practical implementation phase this topic can be extended to a B.Sc. or M.Sc. Thesis.
