- Postdoc in "Eddy-rich Earth System Modelling" (M/F/d)

**Background**

You will work with some of the leading European climate modellers and IT experts in the EU Horizon Europe project “European Eddy-rich Earth System Models (EERIE)” on building, running and analysing a new generation of Earth System Models that are capable of explicitly representing a crucially important, yet unexplored regime of the Earth system - the ocean mesoscale (~10 km at the equator to few km at high latitudes).

**Tasks**
You will be part of a team responsible for setting up and running eddy-rich simulations with the IFS-FESOM. Furthermore, you will research optimal simulation protocols for high-resolution models providing guidance for the next version of the High-Resolution Model Intercomparison Project (HighResMIP2) and other km-scale modelling efforts. Finally, you will analyse the eddy-rich simulations carried out in EERIE in terms of model fidelity and possible “climate surprises” in a warming world that may result from explicitly representing the ocean mesoscale by the laws of physics rather than physically motivated rules of thumb (i.e., parametrisations). On the management side, you will also contribute to and lead some of the regular reporting activities and represent AWI in some of the regular EERIE meetings.

**Requirements**:
A PhD in climate science, atmospheric physics, oceanography, physics, informatics or a related field is required. Demonstrated skill/proficiency in working with climate models (development, running and/or analysis) and good understanding of climate dynamics, especially related to ocean processes, are further requirements. In-depth knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g., Fortran, Python or R) is also expected. Furthermore, excellent English skills, both written and spoken, are expected. Given that the success of this project hinges on effective collaboration between partners, strong communication skills and the ability to work in teams are both a necessity.

Having some of the following skills would be a distinct advantage:

- Experience with HPC systems
- Track record of publishing research in peer-reviewed journals
- Experience with publishing datasets and software
- Ability to make good presentations (e.g., at major conferences)
- Good knowledge of complex data formats (netCDF, zarr)
