Master's Thesis Systematic Analysis of Extreme

The Fraunhofer IEE in Kassel conducts research in the fields of energy economics and energy systems technology with a focus on energy informatics, energy meteorology and geoinformation systems, energy economics and system design, energy process engineering and storage, grid planning and grid operation, grid stability and power converter technology as well as thermal energy technology. Around 450 scientists, employees and students develop solutions for the energy transition and generate around 38 million euros in revenue per year.
With the strong expansion of wind and solar energy in Germany, the dependency of the energy system on weather and climate has increased significantly. In order to ensure security of supply, it is necessary for the energy system to function reliably even under extreme weather conditions. As part of the energy system analysis and the planning of the energy system (e.g. grid expansion planning, design of the power plant fleet and storage facilities, etc.), long-term historical weather time series (so-called reanalyses) are used to plan and reliably design the energy system. Due to limitations in the simulation of the weather in the reanalysis models, it can happen that extreme events are not or only insufficiently represented. The aim of this work is the systematic investigation and comparison of different reanalyses with regard to the accuracy of the representation of extreme events relevant to the energy system.
**What you will do**
- identification of weather extremes relevant to the energy system
- familiarization with the use of reanalysis data in energy system analysis
- development of evaluation criteria for the mapping of extreme events from the perspective of energy system analysis
- systematic examination of reanalysis data with a view to the mapping accuracy of relevant extreme events from the perspective of energy system analysis
- data engineering with a focus on energy system analysis
**What you bring to the table**
- ongoing studies in computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering or similar.
- good knowledge of Python
- knowledge of weather and geodata processing and databases is an advantage
- previous experience in dealing with large amounts of data
- previous knowledge in the field of meteorology is an advantage
- good knowledge of statistics
- experience in software development, especially Git/Gitlab is an advantage
- interest in renewable energies and the energy transition
- independent, structured and conscientious way of working

The monthly working hours are between 40 and 80 hours. The position is initially limited to 6 months. Compensation is based on to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.
