**What part will you play?**

In the case of hardware fingerprinting of a serial communication bus and the characteristics of attached components, the communication is recorded and is represented as time series data. Depending on the signal, it is required to capture the signal for a longer duration. Thus, the raw data set may occupy a large amount of memory. In order to acquire and process such data sets on a constrained embedded device it is necessary to find methods for efficient acquisition and reduced size data representations with the limitation of not loosing any information relevant for fingerprinting the signal characteristics. The acquisition task is accomplished with an ADC and a corresponding measurement circuit. W.r.t. the data representation, a possible solution might include to overlay the data in an eye-diagram, thus creating a probability density function of the signal. Another solution might be to store the Fourier or Wavelet transformed signal.

**Research Question**: How can time series data be acquired, processed and represented in an efficient way on a constrained embedded system for hardware fingerprinting?

In this thesis a in-circuit data acquisition system for serial communication bus fingerprinting should be designed and evaluated. The implementation is done on a microcontroller in the programming language C/C++ or Rust.

**Work Packages (not limited to)**:

- Literature Research on: In-circuit signal monitoring and efficient signal representations
- Systemize signal representation methods w.r.t. complexity, execution time, memory
- Develop in-circuit monitoring system
- Define requirements of the system (Sampling Rate, Resolution)
- Design PCB and manufacture on basis of an already existing system
- Commission the developed system
- Define requirements and implement in-circuit monitoring software
- Evaluation of the system with different methods w.r.t. memory footprint, processing time or information content

**Use your skills to move the world forward.**
- You study in the field of Informatic, Data Science or Computer Engineering
- You’ve got experience in hardware-related programming of real-time operating systems (freeRTOS, Zephyr, ) on microprocessors (ArmCortex, RISC-V, ESP)
- You have already gained knowledge of coding techniques, low-level interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, RS-232, RS-485), protocols and hardware peripherals
- You are familiar with compilers (GCC), build systems (Make, CMake) and version control systems (GIT, SVN,)
- You have a good knowledge of system programming language such as C, C++ or Rust. Knowledge in a high-level programming language is beneficial (Python, Golang, JavaScript)
- You bring the ability to read and understand electronic and mechanic schematics
- You are characterized by communication skills and readiness to work in a team as well as autonomously
- You have good English language skills
