**Postdoc (m/w/d) bis zum 31.03.2029 (Projektende) mit 39,83 Wochenstunden (TVL E13)**:
Der Lehrstuhl befasst sich mit chemischen Sedimenten und wie diese zur Rekonstruktion der Umweltbedingungen in der Erdgeschichte verwendet werden können. Als Werkzeug stehen stabile Isotopenanalysen im Vordergrund.

Das Projekt: Die Stelle wird vom Europäischen Forschungsrat (ERC) im Rahmen eines Consolidator Grant mit dem Titel: "The kinetic oxygen cycle in chemical sediments" (KinO) finanziert. Temperatur ist wahrscheinlich der grundlegendste Umweltparameter, der jedoch für den größten Teils der Erdgeschichte heftig umstritten ist. Die aus den 18O/16O-Isotopenverhältnissen von Karbonaten abgeleiteten Paläotemperaturen können durch i) kinetische Effekte, ii) Alteration oder iii) späte Ausfällung von Sekundärkarbonaten verzerrt werden. Jeder dieser Mechanismen folgt im 18O/16O vs. 17O/16O-Raum einer anderen Trajektorie. Anhand der charakteristischen Steigungen können die jeweiligen Prozesse erkannt und korrigiert werden, so dass sich absolute Paläo-Temperaturen berechnet lassen. Das Hauptziel des Projekts ist es dieses Konzept für verschiedene Karbonate sowohl experimentell als auch anhand von natürlichen Proben zu erforschen. Ein ähnliches Konzept wird für Sulfate erforscht werden.

Isotopenexkursionen bei Kohlenstoff (13C/12C) und Sauerstoff (18O/16O) werden in der Regel zusammen beobachtet, z. B. während Massenaussterbeereignissen, was bedeutet, dass Störungen im globalen Kohlenstoffkreislauf immer mit Paläo-Temperaturschwankungen einhergehen. Manchmal wird das Ausmaß der 18O/16O Variation als echte Temperaturschwankung interpretiert. In anderen Fällen, insbesondere wenn die beobachtete 18O/16O-Kurve auf Temperaturschwankungen in der Größenordnung von einigen zehner Grad Celsius impliziert, wird die Isotopenkurve als verzerrt angesehen (z. B. durch Alteration). Mit Hilfe der Drei-Sauerstoffisotopensystematik kann getestet werden, welcher Prozess die Isotopenexkursionen verursacht hat, was zuverlässige Hinweise sowohl auf die tatsächliche Temperaturschwankung als auch auf die Prozesse liefert, die 18O/16O beeinflusst haben. Dieses Beispiel zeigt, wie zusätzliche 17O/16O-Analysen bei der Rekonstruktion der Paläoumwelt helfen können.

Was wir bieten: Die Stellen befinden sich an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Deutschland. Die Fakultät für Geowissenschaften ist erst vor wenigen Jahren in ganz neue Gebäude eingezogen. Das Institut für Geologie, Mineralogie und Geophysik in Bochum verfügt über eine außergewöhnlich gute Laborausstattung für anorganische Karbonatgeochemie und umfangreiche Erfahrungen in der Karbonatsedimentologie, Diagenese und Geochemie. Neben den Drei-Sauerstoffisotopen-Analysen soll das gesamte Spektrum konventioneller und moderner Proxys in der Karbonat-Petrographie eingesetzt werden, um alle relevanten Prozesse zu entschlüsseln. Die Forschungsarbeiten werden in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der Universität Göttingen, der Universität Köln und der Universität Frankfurt durchgeführt, die komplementäres Fachwissen zur Verfügung stellen und absolute State-of-the-Art-Analysen des gesamten Spektrums stabiler Isotopenverhältnisse (δ13C, δ18O, Δ17O, Δ47, Δ48, δ26Mg, δ44Ca) in Karbonaten ermöglichen.

Prof. Daniel Herwartz hat sich kürzlich der Abteilung Sedimentologie und Isotopengeologie des Instituts (Prof. Adrian Immenhauser und seine Gruppe) angeschlossen, die sich seit langem mit Karbonaten beschäftigt. Durch den Zusammenschluss wollen wir ein lebendiges, vielfältiges, kreatives, soziales, kommunikatives und sehr produktives Arbeitsumfeld schaffen. Sie werden Teil einer größeren Gruppe mit insgesamt sechs ständigen Mitarbeitern (zwei Professoren, ein Laborleiter, zwei technische Assistenten, ein Elektronikingenieur) und mindestens ebenso vielen nicht ständigen Forschern auf Doktoranden
- und Postdoc-Ebene sein, von denen sich viele mit Karbonaten beschäftigen. Unser Ziel ist es, ideale Bedingungen zu schaffen, um diese Synergien für die Durchführung hochkarätiger Forschung zu nutzen. Gleichzeitig unterstützen wir aktiv ein familienfreundliches Arbeitsumfeld.
