The Fraunhofer Research Facility for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy IEG is involved in many exciting national and international projects which actively contribute to the energy transition towards a fully renewable energy system.

The need for tremendous reduction of carbon and gas fired heat plants requires us to rethink the existing infrastructure of heating grids, meaning e.g. the operation at lower supply temperatures as well as the use of multiple heat sources in combination with storage technologies and their optimized system integration and control.

**You will be part of the EU funded project Push-IT.** In this recently started project, where we collaborate with 17 European partners, first demonstration sites for several thermal underground storages will be built across Europe and tested within the next four years. You will investigate how high **seasonal underground thermal energy storages** (UTES) will impact the operation of the connected district heating networks. The primal objective is the optimized operation of the integrated energy system from an economic, ecological and energetic point of view.

During your project or thesis, you will review different underground storage technologies and embed them into the model of a complex energy system. You identify, measure and optimize potential operational costs of the network. Based on this you evaluate economic use-cases for the storage technologies.

- Literature review on modeling of different underground thermal energy storages (UTES)
- Design a generic thermal system model consisting of storages, multiple heat sources/sinks, heat pumps which is connected to the district heating grid
- Identify possible operation strategies for the complex energy system
- Identify economical use cases for storage technologies
- Documentation and presentation of your results

**Was Sie mitbringen**
- Student in Engineering, Mathematics, Energy technology or other STEM programs
- You have a solid knowledge of thermodynamics and thermal energy systems
- High motivation to solve problems independently
- You have programming experience; knowledge of Python is beneficial but not required
- Good English skills, both written and spoken
