EMBL is Europe’s life sciences laboratory - an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology. It operates across six sites in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Cambridge, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome. Bioethics Services, which sits within the DG Office, is located in EMBL’s Headquarters in Heidelberg, and has overall responsibility for Governance, Monitoring, Training and Engagement in the fields of human, animal and environmental ethics. It has close links to the Science & Society Programme, which facilitates internal and external dialogue on the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) of EMBL's research, and which holds a variety of outreach events across all the EMBL sites.

Your role

**Your Role**

You will report to the Ethics Lead (who manages Bioethics Services), and the Bioethics Officer (who reports to the Ethics Lead). Bioethics Services provides a central point of contact for ethical issues across human, animal, environmental and technological ethics. We have two key areas of work - ethics governance, and ethics training & engagement.

Your duties will include:
Assisting the Ethics Lead and the Bioethics Officer with tasks across our portfolio of services and our key areas of work. This could include legal and regulatory research, report writing, and administrative tasks to support the effective running of Bioethics Services (such as ethics audit trail management, committee preparations and event management). This is a really diverse role, which could involve activities like research into AI Ethics or the Nagoya Protocol, or liaising with expert Committee members, to conducting horizon scanning on ethical and legal developments at a European and International level.

You will work in close collaboration with:
The Legal Services division, and in particular with the Legal Officer (Research Ethics & Compliance);
The Compliance department, and in particular the Risk Officer;
The European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences (ELLS), EMBL's science education department; and

Communications, and Outreach Officers at each of the EMBL sites.

You have

You have strong communication, organisational and analytical skills, and you have demonstrated your ability to work in a multicultural environment and to maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. You speak and write English fluently.

You might also have

Previous experience of working in or studying an element of law or ethics, along with project management experience would be an asset, but is not essential.
