The department Adhesion and Interfaces at Fraunhofer IFAM in Bremen is looking for student support on various topics in the context of additive manufacturing (AM) and surface texture/ material properties characterisation.

**EXAMPLE ASSIGNMENTS**:

- Design and manufacturing of a macroscopic demonstrator using stereolithography (SLA) to visualise typical microscopic surface features and properties resulting from metal powder bed fusion (PBF)
- Investigation of influence of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) processing parameters (contour scan) on microstructural properties and resulting crack initiation behaviour under cyclic loading for AlSi7Mg0.6 material
- Adaption of existing fatigue prediction models using alternative standard and non-standard texture parameters for as-built laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) surfaces, including comparison with testing results for AlSi7Mg0.6 material

**What you will do**
- Surface texture characterisation and imaging with various optical microscopy methods
- Evaluation of numerical testing data and image data
- Data processing, modelling, and correlation
- Documentation and presentation of your work
- Discussion of your results with experts in the respective fields

**What you bring to the table**
- Enrolled student in Production Engineering/Aerospace Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering/ Materials Science or similar
- Interest in expanding your knowledge on metal additive manufacturing (specifically LPBF), microstructure of metals, mechanical behaviour, or heat treatment
- Ability to organise and document your work independently (according to your level of study progress)
- Professional working proficiency (oral and written) in either English (preferred) or German
