The objective of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought in countries experiencing serious drought and/or desertification around the world, particularly in Africa, through effective action at all levels, supported by international cooperation and partnership arrangements.

Desertification, along with climate change and the loss of biodiversity were identified as the greatest challenges to sustainable development during the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Established in 1994, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), one of the three “Rio conventions” is the sole legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management.

The Global Mechanism (GM) is an institution of the UNCCD, mandated to assist countries in the mobilization of financial resources from the public and private sector for activities that prevent, control or reverse desertification, land degradation and drought. As the operational arm of the convention, the GM supports countries to translate the Convention into action.

In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Sustainable Development Goals, including goal 15, which aims to “protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss”. As main expected results it defines under target 15.3 to “combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world” by 2030.

In New Delhi, the 14th session of the Conference of Parties (COP) of the UNCCD reached several decisions involving the GM including:

- Continue the mobilization of funding from all sources in support of the implementation of the Convention
- Promote the involvement of the private sector, including the private financial sector, to support countries in combating desertification/land degradation and drought (DLDD) and achieving their voluntary land degradation neutrality targets;
- Support the establishment of partnerships to support addressing DLDD and the contributions required from other bodies, agencies and Conventions to achieve the objectives of the Convention;
The position is based in UNCCD Headquarters office in Bonn. Germany.

**Responsibilities**:
Under the supervision of the Senior Project officer and overall guidance of the Managing Director of the Global Mechanism (GM), the incumbent is responsible for the following specific duties:
1. Implements the GM partnerships strategy in close coordination with relevant units of the UNCCD secretariat. Elements of this strategy include:
a. Support the development of targeted approaches to deepen existing and create new partnerships arrangements for flagship GM initiatives.
b. Carries out targeted follow up with the Great Green Wall Accelerator (GGWA) donor partners, agencies and private sector companies to ensure funds flow, delivery against financial commitments.
c. Develop, in coordination with the UNCCD legal officer, the formal legal documents guiding these arrangements
d. Prepare periodic analysis of existing partnerships to identify gaps and areas of particular success.
2. Support the implementation of the GM resource mobilization strategy in support of country activities to implement the Convention and related plans of action; ensures ongoing analysis of resource mobilization needs and opportunities; stays abreast of latest donor and funding trends, actively engages with peers to solicit best practices in fundraising and resource mobilization.
3. Coordinates, with other relevant staff of the UNCCD/GM, the preparation of required periodic partnership and donor reports as reflected in applicable legal documents.
4. Identify opportunities to promote the development of innovative financial instruments to address Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought (DLDD) and coordinate, along with relevant UNCCD/GM staff, the engagement with partners ensures such instruments are aligned with the objectives of the Convention
5. Performs any other job-related activity required to achieve the goals and objectives of the Global Mechanism.
