The Biomedical Image Analysis lab pursues theoretical advances in machine learning and combinatorial optimization to solve challenging image analysis problems in biology. Their aim is to facilitate scientific discovery via automated analysis of high-throughput microscopy data.
As a PhD Student in the Biomedical Image Analysis lab, you will establish concepts and methods for uncertainty modeling and explainability in the context of structured predictions on images.

The PhD Project aims at establishing concepts and methods for uncertainty modeling and explainability in the context of structured predictions on images. Such predictions are of complex structure compared to, e.g., image-level predictions in that they involve many interacting output variables, usually one per pixel. A use case is image segmentation, where the project will particularly focus on instance segmentation in microscopy images from the biomedical domain.

The position is embedded in the DFG AI Research Unit DesBi.

**Requirements**:

- MSc (or equivalent) in mathematics, computer science, physics, or a related field
- Background in statistics, machine learning, computer vision, or image analysis
- Enthusiasm for formal method development as well as for empirical work with microscopy image data from the biomedical domain
- Keen interest in fundamental research questions in the biomedical sciences
- Python coding skills are a plus
